A tribute exhibition, Askandar Unglehrt: A Third Eye opens to reintroduce the work of the late artist Askandar Unglehrt to the Malaysian public. Spanning over five decades of practice largely based in Penang, Askandar’s work combined wit, cultural critique, and a distinctive visual language that drew from both Eastern and Western influences or, as he described it, “observing the East with one eye and the West with the other”.

The exhibition title references Askandar’s notion of a “Third Eye” - a creative lens through which he synthesized his experiences into visual narratives. His practice often explored the absurdities of modern life through layered, ironic, and highly personal imagery.

This exhibition offers a timely opportunity to revisit Askandar’s legacy and artistic contributions. It also marks the beginning of a larger initiative : a full retrospective of his work is currently in development and scheduled for presentation in 2026-2027.
